Location description

The Hercules Fountain, a modern interpretation of the original Baroque Hercules Fountain pulled down at the end of the 18th century, is located in the broadest part of the Stari trg square, at the point where Stari trg blends into the lower part of the Gornji trg square. It is adorned with a statue of Hercules, a copy of the statue from the original fountain, now kept in the Town Hall vestibule. The fountain was designed by the architect Marko Mušič in collaboration with the sculptor Julijan Renko and the monumental mason Boris Udovič. The verses inscribed on its memorial plaque are by the 20th century Slovenian poet Janez Menart. The fountain was erected in 1991, on the eve of Slovenia's independence.

The Stična Mansion, located at no. 34 Stari trg, clearly stands out from all other buildings lining the square. It was built between 1628 and 1630 to serve as the town residence of the abbots of the Cistercian monastery in the village of Stična. Since its building, the Mansion has undergone several alterations. Its façade, built in the first half of the 18th century, includes some additions of a later date.
