Summer life in the streets of Ljubljana

13 June 2007

During this summer, a host of outdoor events will be livening up the streets of Ljubljana. The wide and varied range of city tours offered by the Ljubljana Tourist Board will include two new tours: an adventure tour entitled The Dragon Code and a Sunday trip along the Ljubljanica river.

The co-financing funds for the city's outdoor events have, to the best of the Ljubljana Tourist Board's ability, been allocated to 58 event organisers supposed to bring diversity to the street life in Ljubljana this summer.

Tivoli park: exhibitions, concerts and the Library under Trees

On weekends during the first half of the summer, the Tivoli park's fishpond area will be hosting the Library under Trees, which will provide a relaxing atmosphere for reading. The Tivoli park will also be the venue for several exhibitions of large-format photographs. The first of them, set to open on 21 June, will feature Andrej Peklaj's series of photographs of Lake Cerknica (Cerkniško jezero), an intermittent lake situated in Slovenia's karst area.

On Sundays from 24 June to 22 July, Promenade Concerts will be held at noon at the top end of the Jakopič Promenade (Jakopičevo sprehajališče). Throughout July and August, the Promenade will be frequented by locals dressed up in historical costumes from various periods.

Interesting promenaders and experiences alongside the Ljubljanica river

Those visiting the old city centre this summer will be encountering Ljubljana's historical residents. Other costumed figures appearing in the streets will include a family of friendly dragons and the Ljubljana Postman on his antique tricycle. From 28 June onwards, a living statue of Jože Plečnik, a famous Slovenian and European architect, will be on view in front of the Town Hall (Mestna hiša) each Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Wednesday evenings will be livened up by Serenades under the Bridge, held on the Ljubljanica riverbanks on the section between the Cobblers' Bridge (Čevljarski most) and Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most). The riverbanks will also be the venue for other interesting events such as theatrical performances for children, set to be held on Plečnik's Steps (Plečnikove stopnice) at the Trnovski pristan embankment on Sundays at 10 a.m. Canoes for use on the Ljubljanica river will be available for hire throughout the summer.

Old city centre shopping and events

A festival entitled Sample Street (Vzorčna ulica), aimed at promoting the Tavčarjeva ulica street as Ljubljana's fashion street, will be organised by the street's shop owners between 18 and 24 June. The festival will feature presentations of Slovenian fashion and design, great shopping opportunities, occasional fashion shows held in the street's park (Miklošičev park), and other events.

On 20 June, the Krakovski nasip embankment by the Ljubljanica river will host the traditional Ljubljanica Triathlon, accompanied by the Water Man Run for children. On 23 June beginning at 10 p.m., the riverbanks at the Krakovski nasip embankment will host the Midsummer Night on the Ljubljanica River, an event featuring a bonfire and a procession of illuminated boats decorated by children from Ljubljana's youth centres.

Between 27 June and 1 July, the streets of the old city centre will be the venue for the traditional Ana Desetnica street theatre festival, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. This year's series of outdoor concerts under the title of The Summer in Ljubljana Old Town will open with a concert by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, set to take place on 30 June at 9 p.m. in the courtyard of Ljubljana Castle.
