Location description

The Cankarjev dom cultural and congress centre, Slovenia's largest cultural institution, was built from 1982 to 1983 according to designs by architect Edvard Ravnikar. It boasts many halls for concerts, theatre performances, film screenings and congress events, which are connected by a large vestibule on the upper floor and a smaller one on the lower floor. The building was originally also intended for political assemblies.

The Cankarjev dom building was a subsequent addition to the original Trg republike square designed by architect Ravnikar in 1960. In order to prevent it from being too tall, most of the halls were built under the ground. The above-the-ground part of the Cankarjev dom building consists of three wings, a taller one in the middle and two lower ones at the sides. The façade is covered in white stone and ornamented with decorative folds at the sides. Located in front of the building is a monument by the sculptor Slavko Tihec, shaped in the form of a multi-layer metal cube featuring the face of Ivan Cankar, the greatest Slovenian writer.
