Frog Alarm - The Year of the Frog 2008

20 Mar 2008 - 31 Dec 2008
Živalski vrt Ljubljana / Ljubljana Zoo, Večna pot 70

This exhibition marking the Year of the Frog is dedicated to amphibians and frogs in particular. In some cultures, frogs symbolise life, happiness and fertility. Today, amphibians face the possibility of extinction, so the exhibition looks at the ways of ensuring their survival. For the first time in history, all important wildlife conservation organisations are taking collective action for the conservation of amphibians.

Amphibians were the first vertebrates to live on land. They lived through the evolution and extinction of dinosaurs. For the first time since then, the Earth faces the possibility of a mass extinction of species. A major danger facing amphibians is chytridiomycosis, a disease caused by a lethal fungus which man spread across the world over the last 50 years by exporting African frogs. Other causes for alarm are human interference in amphibians' natural habitats, environmental pollution and the spreading of non-native species.
