The village of Rakitna

The artificial lake in the village of Rakitna

Distance: 32 km
Direction: Ljubljana –  Podpeč – Rakitna or Ljubljana – Ig – Rakitna

The village of Rakitna lies in the heart of a large karst plateau, at an altitude of 800 metres above sea level, surrounded by the Krimsko-Mokriško hribovje hills. Running across the karst polje situated next to the village is the surface stream of the sinking Rakitniščica river. Its springs were after World War II dammed to form an artificial lake, which attracts numerous day trippers. The lake is suitable for swimming in the summer and ice skating in the winter. The area around Rakitna also boasts numerous cross country skiing trails. Renowned for its benevolent climate, which is due to the mixing of air currents coming from the Mediterranean and the Alps, the village is the home of a children's health centre.

Two thousand years ago, a Roman road used to run past Rakitna. The remains of a massive defensive wall built by the Romans can still be seen today. In the centre of the village stands the Baroque Church of the Holy Cross (Cerkev sv. Križa), whose first mention was in 1420. The church with two side chapels boasts two marble altars. The main altar painting is a work by Henrika Langus, and the sculptures were made by Ivan Šubic. During Christmas time, large numbers of visitors are attracted to the church for its handmade Christmas crib made from tree roots.
